Michigan summers bring longer days, more time outdoors, and, let's be honest, a lot more sweat, sunscreen, and humidity sitting on our skin. All of that build-up can leave your complexion looking dull, congested, and prone to breakouts right when you want it looking its best for backyard barbecues, lake days, and weekend trips up north.
The good news? Regular exfoliation is one of the simplest ways to reverse all of that. At our Rochester Hills, Michigan Skincare Spa Skintuition, we see this every summer: clients come in for a facial or peel and leave with the kind of brighter, smoother skin that makes sunscreen actually sit better and makeup glide on easier. Here's our guide to exfoliating the right way this season- both in-spa and at home.
Why Summer Skin Needs a Different Approach
Exfoliation matters year-round, but summer raises the stakes. Sweat, SPF, chlorine, and higher oil production from the heat and humidity can all clog pores faster than usual. At the same time, sun exposure makes skin more reactive, so it's worth being thoughtful about how you exfoliate rather than just reaching for the harshest scrub in your cabinet. That's exactly why we like to combine professional treatments with the right take-home products, rather than relying on one or the other.
In-Spa Exfoliation Services at Skintuition
If you're local to Rochester Hills, Rochester, Auburn Hills, or the greater Oakland County area, here are the treatments our estheticians recommend most often this time of year:
HydraFacial® For clients who want exfoliation, extraction, and hydration in one appointment — with zero downtime — our HydraFacial® treatments are a go-to all summer. It's an easy add before a wedding, reunion, or vacation.
Express Dermaplaning & Express Enzyme Treatments- A Gentler Summer Favorite If you're spending your summer moving between the sun, the pool, and everywhere in between, these two 30-minute treatments are often the smarter exfoliation choice over a peel:
- Express Dermaplaning uses a professional dermaplaning tool to manually whisk away dead, dry skin cells and vellus hair (aka peach fuzz), leaving skin noticeably smoother right away. The appointment includes a cleanse and prep step, full-face dermaplaning, a treatment mask, a neck and shoulder massage, and a replenishing moisturizer- a true lunchtime reset.
- Express Enzyme uses a professional-strength fruit enzyme to gently dissolve the "glue" holding dead skin cells to living ones, resurfacing skin without any acids or downtime. It's a naturally gentler alternative to a chemical peel and can be a good fit for very sensitive summer skin, as well as pregnant or nursing clients.
Our estheticians reach for these two treatments in the summer because they are ledd likely to ncrease your skin's sensitivity to the sun (stll wear your SPF daily though, of course!). Since dermaplaning is a manual, physical exfoliation and the enzyme treatment works without harsh acids, both are far more forgiving if you've got a pool day, a round of golf, or a boat trip on the calendar right after your appointment. They're also quick- just 30 minutes- with zero visible peeling or flaking, so you can head straight back out into your summer plans with smoother, brighter skin and nothing to hide.
That said, if you're working on a specific concern like sun damage, acne spots, or stubborn uneven tone, a Custom Peel series is still going to get you there faster. We just recommend planning peel appointments around your sun exposure a little more carefully in summer.
Exfoliating Products to Bring Summer Glow Home
Between spa visits, the right at-home exfoliant helps maintain your results and keeps skin ready for sunscreen and makeup. A few of our clients' summer favorites from the Exfoliants & Peels collection on our website:
- Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant (Eminence Organics, $58) — A fizzy, oxygenating treatment that brightens and refines pores — a great mid-week refresh.
- Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant (Eminence Organics, $55) — A rice-based powder exfoliant that resurfaces without stripping the skin barrier.
- Ageless Total Resurfacing Masque (Image Skincare, $44) — A weekly resurfacing treatment to pair with your regular routine for extra renewal.
You can browse the full collection any time on our website, or ask your esthetician to recommend the right one for your skin type at your next visit.
A Few Summer Exfoliation Rules of Thumb
- Don't double up. If you're getting professional skincare services done at the spa, skip at-home acids or scrubs for about a week before and after your appointment.
- SPF is non-negotiable. Freshly exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive, so daily SPF 30+ is a must all summer.
- Less is often more. Two to three at-home exfoliation sessions a week is usually plenty in summer heat. Over-exfoliating can actually make oiliness and irritation worse.
- Let a professional guide your routine. Everyone's summer skin behaves a little differently, especially with Michigan's mix of humidity and lake or pool time.
