10 Years of Skintuition



Celebrating a decade of business and growth, we are thrilled to mark the 10th birthday of Skintuition. At the heart of Skintuition is our founder and owner, Lauren H., whose unwavering commitment has been the driving force all these years. In this special birthday blog post, we sit down with Lauren for an interview, detailing the start of Skintuition, some of the challenges, and how it's changed over the years.


 

Without further ado, meet Lauren!


Can you share the story behind the founding of your business? What inspired you to start it?


In 2008, after 7 years working as an esthetician, I took the leap and opened my own business. Back then, things were quite different!


As a solo esthetician, I offered hair removal, facials, and peels, as well as being my own receptionist. There was no online booking and no fancy software. I took all my appointments the old-fashioned way - with a landline, pencil, and a paper calendar!


Social media was nothing like it is today. Businesses could not rely on social media to find clients, so I had to learn the ways that worked at that time. I ran print ads in local newspapers and coupon books, I did bridal shows and women’s events, I put flyers in different businesses, I handed out business cards to local salons. I did every type of marketing that I could think of looking for clients and getting my name out.


After 6 years, I had established enough of a client base to hire a few employees to help me grow the business. In 2014, I built out the location that we are in today.


How has your business evolved over the past decade?


As the years unfolded, Skintuition has grown so much. We experimented, adding new services, refining existing ones, and even saying goodbye to a few. We've expanded our retail offerings by introducing new, innovative product lines. Most importantly, we’ve built a fantastic team to deliver exceptional experiences. It took time to find the perfect balance, but today, Skintuition boasts a streamlined service menu, featuring treatments curated to be the best in the industry. Each service we offer is delivered by our team of exceptional estheticians – some of the most talented professionals you'll find anywhere.


What milestones or achievements are you most proud of in the last 10 years?


Building a thriving business in the heart of Rochester Hills, my home town, has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Gaining the trust and loyalty of our amazing community is a source of immense pride.


Our commitment to excellence has also been recognized nationally. We've been recognized as Image Skincare's Spa of the Year (multiple times!), solidifying our commitment to exceptional service and results. Additionally, Skintuition ranks among the Top 5% of Hydrafacial providers in the USA, achieving their prestigious Black Diamond Status. We're also proud to be a top Eminence Organics spa, earning Diamond status with them.

What are your goals for the next 10 years?


I would love to develop an online consulting business for estheticians who are looking to follow a similar path to mine. I have had a lot of successes, and also a lot of failures, that give me a unique perspective to start this type of business. It would be rewarding to help others by sharing my expertise.


And, I am always looking into opportunities to open another location, and hope to find a perfect situation for that in the near future!


How has being a business owner changed you personally over the past decade?


Owning a business isn't for the faint of heart. The early years for Skintuition were particularly grueling. It was a lesson in discipline. There were sacrifices, long hours, and a sense of solitude that comes with being the driving force behind a new business. The needs of Skintuition often came first.


But the challenges were outweighed by the rewards. This journey has instilled in me a deep sense of pride, and the challenges I've overcome have instilled a sense of confidence within me that I did not have before becoming a business owner. Seeing Skintuition thrive, fueled by sheer determination and a commitment to excellence, is incredibly empowering.


How are you celebrating your 10th birthday?


I haven’t really thought about a particular celebration, but I will probably pop a bottle of Champagne!
